ABOUT SPAIN

Spain is a republic in southwestern Europe with a few pockets of land around the Strait of Gibraltar and the Atlantic Ocean. Its continental European region is centered in the Iberian Peninsula. In the 76 universities in Spain, 45 of which are funded by the state whereas 31 are private and run by catholic church. Almost 13 universities in Spain are ranked in QS World university ranking in 2019. Most of the universities in Spain are found in the capital city Madrid and the second city Barcelona.

EDUCATION SYSTEM

Education in Spain is regulated by ‘Ministry of education’, and the‘ Law of education’ makes the regulations. As per the law, education is mandatory and free from the age ‘6to16’ for every child in Spain. 

The pre-primary education or kindergarten education is till 6years. The next level is Primary and secondary education, for 6-12 years and 12-16 years respectively. 

Primary education has 3 cycles

First Cycle 6years to 8 years.

Second Cycle 8years to 10 years. 

Third Cycle 10years to 12 years. 

Secondary education is divided into two cycles

First Cycle 12years to 14 years 

Second Cycle 14years to 16 years.

 Compulsory secondary education, or Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO), includes four years of schooling, for students between the ages of 12 and 16. Students who have completed the requirements of ESO and passed their required exams receive a “Certificate of Completion of Secondary Education”. Students who wish to pursue high education in university or a vocational degree has to learn two years of Spanish Baccalaureate or Bachillerato program, at the age of 16. 

 The higher education in Spain is Stipulated as per the Bologna Process—an educational reform act that aims to facilitate student transfer at universities throughout the European Union. University courses have “ECTS” credits, and students will normally take 60 of these credits each year.

Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia are the important and biggest cities in Spain which have the highest number of u universities. In Spain there are 76 universities, these universities are either public or private, 24 of these are private of which 7 are affiliated with the Catholic Church. The public universities are all funded by the state.
