ABOUT MALTA

Malta, officially known as the Republic of Malta and formerly Melita, is an island nation in southern Europe composed of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. It is situated 80 km south of Italy, 284 km east of Tunisia and 333 km north of Libya. With a population of nearly 515,000 over an area of 316 km2.
Malta is the tenth smallest nation in the region and the fourth most populated sovereign country in the world. Its capital is Valletta, the smallest national capital in the European Union with an area of 0.8 km2. The official and national language is Maltese, which originates from Sicilian Arabic, which evolved during the Emirate of Sicily, while English is the second official language. EDUCATION SYSTEM

Malta’s education system is split into four stages: pre-main (age 3–5), primary (age 5–11), secondary (age 11–16) and tertiary. Pre-primary schooling is voluntary but entirely subsidised by the state. In their last ten years of primary education, pupils are kept on track on the basis of educational achievement, and at the age of eleven, students take an eleven plus test to eliminate the high school course of the pupil. Success in the eleven plus test puts a student in a junior high school-a prestigious secondary schoolwhile poor performance or not sitting the exam places a student in a less challenging secondary school.
